The Value of Peer Review

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) supports the idea that 'peer review has played a foundational role in science for hundreds of years, and the value of the peer-reviewed literature has never been greater given the volume of misinformation on scientific issues now available on the Web. Whenever we discuss the implications of our science to society, we should insist that the peer-reviewed literature form the basis for those discussions.' (BAMS, June 2011, p803)

Earlier this year, the U.K. House of Commons Committee on Science and Technology solicited comments on the value of peer review in scientific journals. The AMS Executive Committee prepared and approved a submission to the review which can be read online at:  http://www.ametsoc.org/sss/documents/UKST_peer_review_AMS_responseletter.pdf.
