A new exhibit of eight color satellite images of Earth covering the course of a November day in 1967 is available to view outside of the Schwertfeger Library. These photographs were taken aboard the Applications Technology Satellite (ATS) III using the Multicolor Spin Scan Cloud Camera, developed by SSEC’s founder, Vernor Suomi. This was the first satellite to provide full disk color images of Earth.
The striking contrast in these photos, taken in three channel color, highlights meteorological details on a global scale. They provide a synoptic picture of cloud movement and development that proved revolutionary to weather forecasting.
Check out this video from the library’s Youtube channel which includes the images from the exhibit, plus many more from that day: http://bit.ly/1l7yKrN.
