Daily Weather Maps

The eight posters in the Schwerdtfeger Library exhibit gallery on the third floor of AOSS feature the non-technical weather information on the reverse of Daily Weather Maps published by the National Weather Service (NWS). The images and information were developed for educational purposes and to appeal to general public interest. NWS disseminated information in this way on weather and recreation, public service announcements regarding catastrophic weather events, and methods by which weather data are collected.

In 1871, the United States government began publishing weather maps for defense and agricultural purposes. The responsibility was later transferred to the National Weather Service in 1891. Daily maps were available through the mid 1960s when NWS transitioned to a weekly map for print distribution. They were vital for disseminating weather information, including information on temperature, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, sky conditions, and precipitation in a time before television broadcasts. The maps in this collection were loaned to the library by Margaret Mooney and dates range from 1954-1969.
